The Chinese in New South Wales

A history in pictures to 1940

This exhibition features a selection of historical pictures of the New South Wales Chinese community from the 1860s to the 1930s. There are photographs, illustrated newspaper articles and a few objects.

The pictures are taken from collections available through Trove.

Trove provides keyword-searchable access to digitised copies of many illustrated Australian newspapers. You can also find images collected by the Chinese-Australian Historical Images in Australia project through Trove.

NOTE: Some of the illustrations, original captions and newspaper articles contain language, depictions and descriptions of Chinese people that may be offensive.

This exhibition was created by Kate Bagnall (@baibi).
